What is Small Part Honing?
Small part honing is essential for achieving precise internal surface finishes and tight tolerances in miniature to small machined, stamped, fine blanked, and powdered metal components. This process is crucial for ensuring fit and function of mating parts with working surfaces and tight tolerances. Honing also imparts a “cross-hatch” pattern in the inside diameter of the component which is necessary for optimal performance and longevity of parts used in various high-precision applications across industries such as automotive, aerospace, medical devices, military, agriculture, and manufacturing.
Our Process and Capabilities
Precision Machinery: The Company is equipped to handle prototype, short run, and very high volume production programs utilizing over a dozen Sunnen 1600, 1800, and 3500 series Honing Machines and tooling as well as two (2) advanced 6-spindle Accu-Bore Machines.
These machines provide the capability to handle parts with lengths from .200 inches to 10.00 inches and internal diameters ranging from .075 inches to 6.250 inches.
Exacting Tolerances: The Company’s processes can hold tolerances up to +/-.001″, micro finishes as low as 2Ra, and can achieve very tight concentricity, cylindricity, perpindicularity/ squareness, and straightness specs.
High-Volume Production: Michigan Hone’s setup is ideal for repeatably processing high-volume production runs, allowing it to efficiently produce large quantities of small parts without compromising on quality.
Prototype Development: In addition to high-volume production, we also specialize in prototype development and short run orders. Our team works closely with clients to develop and refine prototypes, ensuring that the final product meets all design and performance criteria.
Typical Applications of Small Part Honing
Transmission Output and Pinion Gears: Ensuring smooth operation and extended lifespan of gears in automotive transmissions.
Parking Pawls and Power Steering Manifolds: Enhancing the performance and reliability of critical automotive components.
Bushings, Barrels, and Spools: Achieving precise surface finishes for components used in various mechanical assemblies.
Rotors, Rollers, and Valves: Improving the efficiency and durability of rotating and sliding parts in machinery.
Sleeves and Bearing Housings: Ensuring tight tolerances and smooth surfaces for components that require precise fits and high-performance operation.
